We wanted to take a moment to note a few activities coming from the Realist Health and Social Care Workforce SIG.

  • First up is an acknowledgement to all our monthly read-along book group attendees. When we launched this idea in March this year, we really didn’t know how it would work out. Over 80 of you expressed an interest in attending, from across the world. Despite many of us reading the episodes last minute, the discussions we’ve had have been hearty, insightful and if I say so myself- joyful. This is to acknowledge all those who have attended- thank you for making this so much fun. We have three sessions left for the year so do join us if you can. You can find more information on the schedule here.

  • Secondly, in June, Ruth was invited as a guest to speak on the Realist Lens podcast, about doing realist research with the healthcare workforce. You can find the episode here along with many other fascinating conversations, led by Alejandro Arguelles Bullon.

  • Thirdly and finally, in September we started the MoRRE project (New and Extended Practice Roles in NHS Primary and Community Health and Social Care: A Scoping Review and Meta-review of Realist Reviews and Evaluations with integrated Knowledge Mobilisation). This is a study co-lead by Prof Kamal Mahtani and Dr Ruth Abrams, with Prof Geoff Wong, and Dr Georgette Eaton involved alongside many others (Associate Professor Kerryn Husk; Dr Alyson Huntley; Dr David Nunan; Dr Stephanie Tierney; Dr Victoria Tzortziou Brown; Ms Beccy Baird; Ms Nia Roberts; Professor Claire Goodman; Professor Sophie Park).

  • A key work package starting mid 2026 will be to determine how we can produce meta programme theories based on previous realist work, and the value (or not) of doing so. You can find more information here, and we will keep you updated on progress as part of this network.

We always welcome new members, so please do reach out to sign up to our mailing list (r.abrams@surrey.ac.uk), and let us know of anything you’d like to see as part of our programme in 2026.
